Welcome to Gilpin Legacy, a community dedicated to discovering, preserving, and sharing the history of the Gilpin family and its contributions to American history.
Founded by a Gilpin descendant, this site serves as a gathering place for family members, historians, researchers, preservationists, and friends who share an interest in preserving the stories, records, memorials, and historical legacy of the Gilpin family for future generations.
Our Mission
The mission of Gilpin Legacy is to build a community committed to preserving the history and heritage of the Gilpin family through historical research, education, documentation, collaboration, and historic preservation initiatives.
Through this effort, we hope to connect descendants, encourage research, support preservation projects, and ensure that the lives and achievements of the Gilpin family remain part of our shared historical record.
Current Project: The George Gilpin Gravesite Restoration
The inaugural project of Gilpin Legacy is the restoration of the gravesite of Colonel George Gilpin and the preservation of the gravesite of his daughter, Maria (Mary) Gilpin, at historic Christ Church Cemetery in Alexandria, Virginia.
Colonel George Gilpin was a prominent figure in the early history of Alexandria and Virginia. Over time, his original gravestone was lost, while Maria Gilpin's gravestone has experienced the effects of age and weathering. This project seeks to restore these important memorials and honor their place in Alexandria's history.
The project includes:
Restoration of the lost gravestone of Colonel George Gilpin
Conservation and repair of Maria (Mary) Gilpin's gravestone
Historical research and documentation
Collaboration with preservation organizations and community partners
Support for the long-term preservation of Christ Church Cemetery

Gilpin Legacy is currently an independent family-led historical preservation initiative and is not a 501(c)(3) organization.
At this stage, we are actively seeking:
Partnerships with established 501(c)(3) organizations
Guidance from preservation and historical societies
Support from descendants and family researchers
Collaboration with historians, genealogists, and preservation professionals
Community members interested in advancing the George Gilpin restoration project
